Vol. 458 No. 8

Written Answers. - VEC Grants.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

122 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education if she will make a vocational education committee higher education grant available to a person (details supplied) in County Cork whose family were only £5 over the limit. [17618/95]

The case in question involves the means test for an ESF maintenance grant only. Tuition fees are not payable by students on ESF courses.

I have had inquiries made and it is understood from County Cork vocational education committee the body entrusted with the means testing in this case, that the reckonable income of the applicants parents renders him ineligible for a maintenance grant.

In the circumstances it would not be open to me to make an exception and allow the payment of a maintenance grant in contravention of the terms of the published scheme.
