Vol. 458 No. 8

Written Answers. - Late Starting Dates.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

125 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Education whether a circular has been sent to post-primary schools regarding later starting dates for State examinations in 1997; the reason for this change; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17652/95]

The dates for the 1996 certificate examinations were advised to schools by circular letter in June 1995.

To facilitate long-term planning in schools the start date for the 1977 written examinations, 11 June, was also indicated in the circular. This starting date is six days later than the starting date in 1995 but is in accordance with longestablished and agreed procedures and takes account of the cyclical nature of the timetable.

In accordance with agreed procedures the examinations have for many years begun on a Wednesday, not earlier than 5 June and not later than 11 June. Following are the start dates for the past 10 years, including the scheduled dates in 1996 and 1997:
