Vol. 458 No. 8

Written Answers. - Referendum Literature.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

127 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Education the action, if any, she intends to take regarding the circulation of anti-divorce literature to pupils in a national school. [17654/95]

I responded to concerns expressed about the circulation of referendum literature in national schools by issuing a statement on Thursday, 9 November last which drew attention to Rule 9 (3) of the Rules for National Schools which states:

"No political meeting may be held nor may any political business be transacted in schools...".

I reminded schools that the only exceptions to the rule are (1) the use of schools as polling stations and (2) the use of schoolrooms outside of school hours for public meetings at specific periods during elections.
