Vol. 458 No. 8

Written Answers. - Special Need Teachers.

Brendan Kenneally

Question:

137 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for Education the number of special need teachers operating in each county at primary level; the plans, if any, she has to expand this service; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17741/95]

Details of the number of remedial teachers, resource teachers and special class teachers operating in each county at primary level are set out in the following table.

Remedial and resource teachers are allocated on the basis of priority of need. I recently allocated an additional 55 remedial teachers and ten resource teachers to primary schools with effect from September 1995.

In addition to the above supports, the visiting teacher service provides special tuition for children with visual or hearing impairment and certain other disabilities. A total of 37 visiting teachers are currently in place. The service provided by these teachers can straddle a number of counties.

Teachers are automatically allocated to special classes for mildly handicapped children once the need for such a service has been established.

The White Paper on Education Charting our Education Future sets out the future strategy for providing a suitable education service for pupils with special needs.
