Vol. 458 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Vandalism.

Peter Barry

Question:

142 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Education the number of schools vandalised in Cork city over the past five years; the amount of money required from the Exchequer to repair the damage; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17814/95]

Detailed statistical information is not available to my Department on the matters raised by the Deputy in regard to vandalism in Cork city schools over the past five years. Security of school buildings is a matter for the individual school authorities in the first instance.

In general national schools, secondary schools and vocational schools are insured and the Department would not necessarily be informed of incidents of vandalism. Claims in respect of such damage are dealt with by the school authorities usually without reference to the Department.
