Vol. 458 No. 8

Written Answers. - BSE Outbreaks.

Ivor Callely

Question:

177 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of BSE outbreaks confirmed to date in 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17857/95]

Thirteen cases of BSE have been confirmed in Ireland, to date, in 1995. As there were 19 cases confirmed last year, this represents a decrease compared to 1994 levels. Movement restrictions are placed on each herd in which a confirmed case occurs and a depopulation scheme is in place whereby the herds are bought out at current market prices.
