Vol. 458 No. 8

Written Answers. - Sheep Scab.

James Leonard

Question:

180 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if there is an increase in the incidence of sheep scab; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17876/95]

To date in 1995 a total of 30 confirmed sheep scab outbreaks have been reported to my Department as compared with a total of 56 for the year 1994. Since the abolition of compulsory sheep dipping, there have been unverified reports of a rise in the incidence of sheep scab. I have, accordingly, introduced a confidential phoneline service to assist with the reporting of suspected outbreaks. Of a total of 69 calls received to date, sufficient information was received for follow-up action in respect of 21 of these calls.

While the onus rests on individual flockowners to protect their sheep against scab, I have introduced a package of measures, following consultation with flockowner representatives, to highlight the need to control and eradicate the disease. In addition, livestock mart managers have been asked to assist in combating sheep scab and my Department has undertaken to increase its vigilance at livestock marts, meat plants and farm inspections and to follow-up with the Local Authorities if any indications of scab arise. I shall keep this programme under constant review. It is important to note that sheep scab is by law still a notifiable disease and outbreaks must be dealt with by compulsory treatment of the affected and contiguous flocks until the outbreak is controlled.
