64 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Taoiseach the current size of the Irish sheep herd; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17716/95]

The latest available figure for the size of the Irish sheep herd is from the June 1995 Agricultural Postal Survey conducted by the Central Statistics Office.

Provisional estimates from this survey were published on 12 September 1995 showing the total number of sheep in the State on 1 June 1995 at 8,378,600.
