Vol. 458 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tax Liability Threshold.

Brendan Kenneally

Question:

78 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for Finance the cost to the Exchequer of increasing the income threshold by £2,000 in respect of a single person and £4,000 in respect of a married couple below which a taxpayer does not become liable for tax. [17743/95]

It is assumed that the Deputy's question relates to the cost of increasing the income tax exemption limits by the amounts stated.

The full year cost to the Exchequer, estimated by reference to the income tax year 1996-97, of increasing the exemption limits by £2,000 for single and widowed persons and £4,000 for married couples is £336.7 million.

This estimate is provisional and is likely to be reviewed.
