Vol. 458 No. 8

Written Answers. - Rent Arrears.

Patrick D. Harte

Question:

117 Mr. Harte asked the Minister for the Environment the total amount owed in arrears in differential rent; the total amount of arrears in housing loans/mortgage schemes; the total indebtedness of each local authority in the State setting out the information in respect of each local authority; the number of tenants who owe between £200 to £500, £500 to £1,000, £1,000 to £1,500, £1,500 to £2,000 and over £2,000; the largest outstanding amount owed by one tenant; and if he will give the relevant information in respect of arrears in housing loan/mortgages schemes. [17864/95]

Returns from local authorities, who are responsible for rent collection, indicate that at 31 December 1994, rent arrears were some £13 million; this includes arrears by a small number of tenants on fixed rents. A breakdown of this amount in the form requested, and information relating to arrears under housing loan-mortgage schemes, is not available in the Department. Particulars of the indebtedness of each local authority are included in the Annual Returns of Local Taxation, copies of which, in respect of 1993 and previous years, are in the Oireachtas library.
