Vol. 459 No. 1

Written Answers. - Weight Limits.

Seán Haughey

Question:

96 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice if she has satisfied herself that the Garda is enforcing the law in relation to weight limits for loads carried by haulage firms on an all-year-round basis; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17922/95]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the enforcement of the legislation in relation to weight limits for loads carried by haulage firms is given a high priority throughout the year.

A system of preplanned checkpoints has been introduced by the Garda authorities in order to ensure a consistent and focused enforcement of road traffic-transport legislation in the DMA and throughout the country. These checkpoints are manned by traffic and transport personnel in the DMA and Traffic Corps members outside the DMA. They operate twice daily on main traffic arteries, including port routes, and are aimed in particular at goods vehicles and coaches to ensure compliance with weight, tachograph, speed and vehicle roadworthiness regulations.

The Deputy may wish to note that the commissioner's annual reports show that 730, 875 and 758 prosecutions were taken during 1992, 1993 and 1994, respectively, in the enforcement of the maximum weights regulations.
