Vol. 459 No. 5

Written Answers. - Student's Summer Jobs Scheme.

Joe Walsh

Question:

88 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of applications for the successful student summer jobs scheme; the number who were approved for the scheme; the number who subsequently obtained jobs under the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18422/95]

The students' summer jobs scheme proved to be a major success again this year with very positive responses from both sponsors and students.

A total of 22,892 students applied this year which is a 65 per cent increase on the number of claims received in 1994. Some 18,895 students were approved to participate in the scheme and were issued with job certificates. At this stage, it is estimated that 15,700 students succeeded in finding work with sponsors (83 per cent of the total approved) compared to 1994 when 9,200 students participated (76 per cent of the total approved).

A total of over 21,700 jobs were on offer this year from almost 3,400 sponsors and students did not report to my Department that they had any major difficulty in finding work.
