Vol. 459 No. 7

Written Answers. - Third-level Fee Expenses.

Mary Harney

Question:

33 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Education the safeguards, if any, she has put in place to ensure that the fees charged to third-level students for registration, capitation, examination and other expenses will not negate the effect of the abolition of tuition fees. [18776/95]

On the basis of a recommendation from the working party which I established to advise me on the arrangements for implementing the free fees initiative I conveyed approval to third level colleges to charge students up to £150 for examinations, registration and student services. The charge is fixed at a maximum of £150 for the 1995-96 and 1996-97 academic years. Any proposal for an increase in subsequent years will be subject to the approval of the Minister for Education.

In these circumstances there is no question of increases in the charge negating the effect of the abolition of tuition fees which in certain instances exceed £2,000.
