Vol. 460 No. 3

Misuse of Drugs Bill, 1996: First Stage.

I move:

That leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to amend the criminal law and procedure in relation to the misuse of controlled drugs and to provide additional powers to the Garda Síochána and other officials in relation to the detection, investigation and prosecution of offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977 and 1984.

Is the Bill opposed?

Question put and agreed to.

Since this is a Private Members' Bill Second Stage will, under Standing Orders, be taken in Private Members' time.

Will the Taoiseach, in view of the urgency of the situation, agree to take it in Government time?

I am dealing with this matter in accordance with proper procedure.

I move: "That the Bill be taken in Private Members' Time."

Question put and agreed to.
