Written Answers. - Cardiac Surgeon Appointment.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

187 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health when the second cardiac surgeon will take up duty in University Hospital, Cork; and the funding that will be provided to ensure the necessary back-up staff and facilities. [1262/96]

Limerick East): My Department approved the filling of the post of cardiac surgeon at University Hospital, Cork on 16 April 1992. The post was subsequently cleared by Comhairle na nOspidéal on 2 July 1992. The Local Appointments Commission was then requested to proceed with the recruitment process. The post was subsequently advertised twice, most recently on 15 January 1995, with a closing date of 15 February 1995. The Commission made it's recommendation in August 1995 and a consultant has now been appointed to the post. The appointee will take up duty on 1 April, 1996.

Funding has been put in place to provide for the necessary infrastructural support for this service development.
