Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Infectious Diseases Consultant Post.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

193 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health the concerns, if any, he has at the 30 per cent increase in the number of new STD cases in the Southern Health Board area; and the funding he intends to allocate for additional staff and facilities for the creation of the post of infectious disease consultant. [1268/96]

Limerick East): The upward trends in sexually transmitted diseases in the Southern Health Board area indicate the need for preventive and treatment services. In 1995 my Department allocated the sum of £137,000 to the Southern Health Board for the establishment of a consultant post in infectious diseases and to improve support facilities for the creation of the post. The question of ancillary staff to this post is under consideration.
