Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Public Health Sponsorship.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

200 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Health if he will clarify reports that he is planning to allow the commercial sponsoring of stoma care nurses in hospitals and health boards; his views on such sponsorship in a public health system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1403/96]

Limerick East): I am informed that the management of the health boards have taken steps to develop a more comprehensive policy in this area, having regard to the important ethical and legal considerations which arise. I am asking the boards to extend their consideration to all situations similar to those which have arisen in relation to stoma care and to conclude their deliberations as quickly as possible. I consider that there is a need to clarify policy quickly on the question of sponsorship, other than for properly authorised clinical research and to apply that policy to all public health agencies. My primary concern is to ensure that there are no obstacles to the provision of the most appropriate patient care and the achievement of optimum value for money in the procurement and delivery of goods and services.
