Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Royal Canal Restoration Project.

Willie Penrose

Question:

227 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the amount spent on the Royal Canal Restoration Project in 1995; the amount likely to be expended in 1996; the programme likely to be implemented in 1996, particularly from Mullingar, County Westmeath, in a westwards direction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1014/96]

Capital expenditure on the Royal Canal Restoration Project in 1995 was £700,000 approximately and the amount for 1996 is estimated at £886,000.

The works programme proposed for the stretch of canal west of Mullingar is as follows: dredging of main line canal to Richmond Harbour and part of the Longford Branch; manufacture and installation of lock gates; bank repairs; appointment of consultants in connection with the construction of new bridges to replace three of the culverted road crossings and sourcing of additional water supplies.
