Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Grant Schemes.

James McDaid

Question:

249 Dr. McDaid asked the Minister for the Environment if the grant scheme funding public conveniences was terminated on 31 December 1995; and the plans, if any, he has to replace this grant scheme to ensure that numerous beaches and scenic areas, such as Shrove and Kinnego Bays in Inishowen County Donegal, can acquire such basic tourist facilities. [19377/96]

Noel Dempsey

Question:

265 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment if he will reintroduce grants for the provision of public conveniences, which were removed on 31 December 1995, to maintain tourist facilities in the Inishowen/Donegal area in view of the importance of cross-Border, national and international tourism at present. [1023/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 249 and 265 together.

It is not proposed to reintroduce this specific grant scheme under which less than £150,000 in total was paid to local authorities in each of the last two years. However, local authorities have been advised that my Department will consider approving loans for public convenience projects where these cannot be funded from the resources otherwise available.
