Question:

270 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for the Environment if he received a report on the damage caused by the severe flooding at Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary; the extra moneys he will allocate for bridge repairs and road repairs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1044/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 268, 269, and 270 inclusive, together.

At the request of the Office of Public Works, reports on the recent flooding incidents in Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir, and in other areas were sought and obtained by my Department from the local authorities concerned and have been forwarded to that office. The Minister of State in charge of the Office of Public Works chairs an interdepartmental committee with responsibility for the co-ordination of a response to the effects of bad weather.
It has not been the practice in recent years to make special grants to road authorities towards the cost of remedial works to non-national roads and bridges damaged by flooding. Instead, local authorities have been free to meet such costs from the increased discretionary grants made available to them. The estimates provision for non-national roads in 1996 will allow for further substantial increases in grant allocations generally. I expect to be in a position to announce the individual allocations in the near future.
