Joe Walsh

Question:

302 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to sanction the commencement of work on measures to alleviate flooding at the eastern end of Clonakilty town, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1431/96]

Question:

306 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for the Environment if he will respond to a long standing request to meet a delegation from Clonakilty Urban District Council, County Cork, regarding flooding in the town; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1436/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 302 and 306 together. General responsibility for remedying the causes of flooding has been assigned by the Government to the Office of Public Works. Against this background, Clonakilty UDC have already been advised that it would not be appropriate for me to meet them on this matter.

As far as surface water flooding at the eastern end of the town is concerned, my Department is at present examining drainage proposals from the UDC in the context of the available funds, including those under the small schemes programme, for the water and sewerage programme in 1996.
