The purpose of the allocation under subhead L of Vote 28 in the 1996 Estimates is to meet building grants and capital costs in respect of secondary, vocational, community and comprehensive schools. A sum of £39 million was expended under this subhead in 1995. This allocation was utilised in the following way: new schools and major extensions, in developing areas or arising from rationalisation of facilities; provision of temporary accommodation to meet short-term increases in enrolment; minor capital works and emergency type projects; furniture and equipment; professional design fees; and site acquisitions.
