Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Meath Educational Psychology Services.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

358 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Education the facilitates which are available from her Department for assessment of pupils of primary schools in County Meath by educational psychologists; and the procedures which parents must follow to avail of such services. [1142/96]

My Department does not provide a psychological service for primary schools in the County Meath area at present. In general, the responsibility for the psychological assessment of children in primary schools, where such is deemed necessary, is a matter for the regional health boards through the appropriate director of community care. Parents may access this service through the school medical service or the family doctor. My Department has begun to develop a psychological service for primary schools in a limited number of areas, giving priority to schools serving disadvantaged areas. Parents may access this service, where available, through the school. However, it will be some time before this service will be in a position to take on responsibility for psychological assessment for educational purposes from the health authorities.
