Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - PE Hall for Cork School.

Michael Creed

Question:

364 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if she has received representation from a school (details supplied) in County Cork for funding towards the construction and provision of a physical education hall and if so, the current position in respect of this application. [1211/96]

The post-primary school referred to by the Deputy applied to my Department for grant aid towards the cost of providing a physical education hall. The school also applied for an extension requiring major capital expenditure, as did the other post-primary school in the centre. The combined enrolment of the two schools is around 670, which is an ideal size for a single school development. In the circumstances, my Department is investigating the possibility of rationalisation in the centre before deciding on the individual building projects, including the provision of grant-aid for physical education facilities at the school in question. My Department has written to both school managements in the matter seeking their observations regarding rationalisation.
