Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Store Street (Dublin) Garda Station.

Tony Gregory

Question:

381 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice her views on the appalling conditions in Store Street Garda Station, Dublin 1, as outlined in the November-December 1995 edition of Garda News, Volume 14; and the timescale for her proposals to remedy this unacceptable situation. [19310/96]

I am well aware of the conditions in Store Street Garda station. It is proposed to build a new divisional headquarters Garda station at Store Street. It is anticipated that tenders for the construction project will issue in April with a view to work commencing by the end of June. It is expected that the project, which will involve the construction of new accommodation beside the existing station in phase one to be followed by demolition of the existing station and rebuilding on that site in phase two, will take up to three years to complete. For the avoidance of any doubts on the matter, I should say that the plans I have outlined were in place long before the publication of the article referred to by the Deputy and, since becoming Minister, I have progressed this project as a matter of urgency.
