Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Badger-Baiting.

Tony Gregory

Question:

382 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice her response to the allegation contained in an article in The Irish Times (details supplied) on 21 December 1995, that a centre for badger-baiting had been established by an Englishman in the north-midlands of this country; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19311/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there is no evidence to substantiate the allegations in question. If the Deputy has any information on the subject I will be happy to pass it on to the Garda for further investigation.

The Garda closely monitor areas suspected of being used for badger-baiting and persons suspected of being involved in such activities. Any incidents of this nature which come to their attention are fully investigated and criminal proceedings instituted where evidence supports such a course of action.
