Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Extradition to Britain.

Tony Gregory

Question:

400 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if she will request the Garda Commissioner to discuss with his British counterpart the possibility of the extradition to Britain of the main associates of the drug dealer (details supplied) to stand trial with him. [1037/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the question of making an application for extradition of persons resident in this jurisdiction to the United Kingdom is solely a matter for the authorities in the United Kingdom.

The only function of the Garda in relation to Part III of the Extradition Act, 1965, is in accepting service of the warrants from the police force of the requesting country and, following endorsement by an Assistant Commissioner of An Garda Síochána, executing the warrant or warrants.
