Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Patrick J. Morley

Question:

407 Mr. Morley asked the Minister for Justice the number of officers attached to each Garda Station in County Mayo; and their rank in each case. [1116/96]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed deployment of Garda personnel and resources to different areas. I have been informed by the Garda authorities that they are opposed to supplying the detailed information being sought by the Deputy on the grounds of security and in the interests of crime prevention generally, and I am in agreement with this view.

I propose, however, to provide the strength by rank in the Mayo division which is as follows:

Chief Superintendent

1

Superintendent

5

Inspector

2

Sergeant

41

Garda

198

Total

247

Question:

409 Mr. Morley asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí in all ranks in the Galway West division on 1 January 1993. [1190/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 408 and 409 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the total strength of the Galway West Division was 323 on 31 December 1992, 319 in December 1994 and 310 in September 1995.

The following table sets out details on the numbers of retirements and replacements in the Galway West Division since 1 January 1993.
