Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Renmore (Galway) Barracks Heating System.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

595 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for Defence the basis on which the decision was taken to convert the heating system in Renmore Barracks from turf firing to gas, thus depriving local turf producers of a very important source of income and putting local Connemara employment at risk. [19265/95]

In line with Government energy policy my Department has been implementing arrangements aimed at maximising energy efficiency in military barracks. Work on the conversion of heating systems at Renmore Barracks was initiated in 1991 and the final phase of the work there is largely completed. Accordingly, on conclusion of the present heating season, there will be no further requirements for turf at that barracks.
