Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Clogherhead (Louth) Pier.

Michael Bell

Question:

609 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Marine the plans, if any, he has to assist with work required on the pier at Clogherhead, County Louth; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that for 20 years efforts have been made to secure assistance from his Department to secure and replace the existing pier which is in a bad state; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19117/95]

I am aware of the fishing industry's requesrts to have improved landing facilities at Clogherhead and my Department has examined the situation in detail in recent years. This harbour is very exposed and any worthwhile development would require a significant financial investment.

A fishery harbour development programme for the current year is being finalised by my Department at present. The proposals for Clogherhead are being considered in that context.

I should caution, however, that funding for fishery harbour development under the fisheries operational programme is very limited and that only projects which can demonstrate a significant potential return from the fisheries perspective will be successful.
