Vol. 460 No. 6

Written Answers. - North-West MMDS.

John Ellis

Question:

255 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the action, if any, he proposes to take regarding the problems being posed by a multi microwave distribution system being installed in the north-west; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1710/96]

Multipoint microwave distribution systems was introduced a number of years ago to provide high quality, reliable multichannel television services to those parts of the country where licensed cable television is not available. It is appropriate therefore that people in the north west should have access to it, just as in other parts of the country.

I am not aware of the specific nature, of the problems regarding MMDS to which the Deputy's question refers. I am aware that there has been some objection to the proposed erection of an MMDS transmitter on a Telecom Éireann mast in County Donegal. Erection of such transmitters is a normal and relatively routine part of providing a licensed MMDS service and any arrangements as to the sharing of mast facilities are a matter for the two companies involved. There may also be some concern in the area relating to planning permission for the mast, but I have no function in relation to this aspect of the matter.
If the Deputy would care to make a more specific inquiry in this matter, relating to my area of responsibility, I would be happy to respond to it.
