Question:

126 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Health the number of complaints that were made to the Medical Council in respect of the consultant at the centre of the sexual abuse case at Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, County Louth,; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1761/96]

Limerick-East): The matter referred to by the Deputy is the statutory responsibility of the Fitness to Practise Committee of the Medical Council. The Medical Council has indicated that it considers, that by virtue of the provisions of section 45 (5) of the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978, that the Fitness to Practise Committee is prevented from divulging matters about which a complaint or an application for an inquiry has been made.
