Vol. 461 No. 1

Written Answers - Garda Station Opening Hours.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

182 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Justice if she will consider extending the opening hours of the Garda station in Ballybofey, County Donegal. [2443/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the opening hours of Ballybofey Garda station were changed in March 1995. The station is now open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday inclusive and from midday to 2 p.m. on Sundays. This change in opening hours was introduced to provide a more efficient service to the public. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that any increase in opening hours would involve having more gardaí in the station, with a corresponding reduction in the number of gardaí available for policing duties on the streets. The Garda authorities are satisfied that the current opening hours at Ballybofey in conjunction with the direct communication link and the telephone call diversion system provide for the most efficient and effective policing service to the local community.
