The following is the strength for the Force on the years ending 31-12-1965, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995:

I should point out that prior to 1989 Garda recruits were included in the overall strength figures. Since April 1989, with the introduction of the two year training programme for recruits, only those members who have been attested to the force, that is to say, completed phase 3 of training, are included in the overall strength of the force. There are 436 recruits in phases 1, 2 and 3 of training at present.
