Of the 17 staff in Department of Social Welfare ministerial offices, 14 are civil servants. These include a ministerial programme manager, a private secretary, a principal officer, three executive officers, seven clerical officers and two clerical assistant-typists. The remaining three are unestablished staff: a special adviser, a personal assistant and a personal secretary.

The recently established research unit consists of five unestablished staff, which consists of a senior research assistant, a full-time research assistant, two part-time research assistants and an administrative assistant.
There is a permanent position of press officer attached to my Department which is filled by a civil servant. The drivers of the Minister's car are members of the Garda Síochána employed by the Department of Justice.
The terms of appointment and conditions of the unestablished staff detailed above are in accordance with standard terms and conditions which are determined by the Department of Finance.
