Vol. 461 No. 1

Written Answers - Mitchell Commission Report.

Tom Kitt

Question:

63 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the contacts, if any, the Government has had with the British Labour Party in relation to the Mitchell commission report prior to the debate in the House of Commons in which Mr. Tony Blair, MP supported the British Prime Minister's position on the question of elections in Northern Ireland. [2476/96]

The Government has a range of ongoing contacts with British political parties and British political opinion generally. As part of its normal diplomatic work, our embassy in London is active in explaining the Government's policy.

In recent months all the main political parties in Britain have been made aware in detail of the Government's approach to the peace process. Particular emphasis has been placed on the need to use the twin-track process agreed between the two Governments to advance our shared aim of launching all-party talks by the end of February.
