Vol. 461 No. 6

Written Answers. - Clonmel (Tipperary) Railway Bridge.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

32 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for the Environment if he will provide funding to widen the railway bridge on the Fethard road entrance to Clonmel, County Tipperary, in order to ensure safety for pedestrians in view of the dramatic increase in traffic volume as a result of the new by-pass; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3353/96]

As the bridge in question is on a regional road, the cost of the works involved would normally fall to be met from Tipperary South Riding County Council's own resources provision for such roads, supplemented by the available road grants. It is a matter for the council to determine its own priorities in the expenditure of these grants, subject to the general guidelines issued by my Department. It would also be open to the local authority to consider whether to apply for funding in 1997 for the project under the EU co-financed scheme of grants. No such application was made in respect of it under the 1996 scheme.
