Vol. 461 No. 6

Written Answers. - Mutton Island (Galway) Sewage Treatment Plant.

Robert Molloy

Question:

39 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment the current position regarding the application for Cohesion Funding for Galway city main drainage Mutton Island treatment plant. [3381/96]

The application for Cohesion Fund assistance for the planning and construction of the Galway main drainage scheme has been with the European Commission since July 1993. In addition to the treatment plant at Mutton Island, the scheme includes collector systems for Oranmore and Knocknacarra. These latter elements have already been approved for Cohesion Fund assistance.

I have recently authorised Galway Corporation, notwithstanding reservations expressed by the European Commission, to advance the development of the Mutton Island treatment plant. In doing so, I made it clear that we are maintaining the application for Cohesion Fund assistance for this element of the overall scheme. This remains the position.
