Vol. 461 No. 7

Written Answers. - Suicide Research Funds.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

151 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Health if he will allocate funds to the Suicide Research Foundation to ensure that it can continue its work. [3898/96]

Limerick East): The Suicide Research Foundation is a voluntary organisation based in Cork.

The Department of Health has provided funding through the Health Research Board, to the Foundation in respect of an intervention study on para-suicide being conducted in the Southern Health Board and Mid-Western Health Board regions. The balance of funding is being made available by the two health boards concerned. Funding for the study is assured until December 1996 in respect of the Southern Health Board dimension, and until July 1997 in respect of the Mid-Western Health Board dimension.
I would like to assure the Deputy of the importance I attach to research in the difficult area of suicide and of the high regard I have for the work of the Suicide Research Foundation.
