Vol. 461 No. 7

Written Answers. - Open Seasons Order.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

155 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the hunting species on the open seasons order advertised to foreign tourist shooters, in their own language; and the number of foreign languages in which the open seasons order is published. [3561/96]

Notices are issued with licences to all out of State hunters and shoot operators advising them of the species that may be hunted and the time of the year when such hunting is permitted. These notices are printed in English. The open seasons order is advertised in the main daily news papers and relevant Irish publications in English. I understand that Bord Fáilte formerly produced information leaflets in French giving details of huntable species and seasons but these have not been updated since 1992. The National Parks and Wildlife Service previously produced a notice setting out general rules and seasons in German, Italian and French but this practice was discontinued. I have given instructions, however, that the leaflet be re-issued in French and Italian from next season and this will cater for the bulk of out of State hunters.
