Vol. 461 No. 7

Written Answers. - Wildlife Officers' Duties.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

160 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht his views on whether it is compatible with the duties of a wildlife officer that he engage in the commercial exploitation of wildlife and that he assist family members or relatives in such commercial circumstances. [3591/96]

The Deputy will be aware that civil servants may not be connected with an outside business which could interfere with the efficient performance of their duties. In addition officials must not engage in business or activity in which a conflict of interest could arise. In general, I would not consider it appropriate for a wildlife official to engage in commercial exploitation of wildlife but it would be necessary to look at such matters on a case by case basis to ensure that no conflict of interest arises.
