Vol. 461 No. 7

Written Answers. - Driving School Standards.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

171 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment the talks, if any, he has had with motoring school associations regarding standards for driving schools; if so, the associations he or his officials met; and if he intends to have more meetings. [3584/96]

Last July I met a deputation from the Driving Instructor Register (comprising representatives of two national associations of motor schools and driving instructors) to discuss their proposals for a voluntary scheme of registration of driving instructors. Prior to that, officials of my Department had met those representatives on a number of occasions and offered assistance and guidance in drawing up the proposals. Contact at official level has been maintained since July, and I had an informal discussion on the topic in December 1995 with the chairman of the register. I understand that the registration scheme, which will be operated in association with the Irish Insurance Federation, is expected to be launched fairly soon.
