Vol. 461 No. 7

Written Answers. - Youth and Sport Grants.

Liam Fitzgerald

Question:

195 Mr. L. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education the total grant allocation under youth and sport; the grants allocated on a constituency basis; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3608/96]

The total grant allocation for youth and sport in 1996 is £26.681 million.

Records are not maintained in such a way as would enable me to provide details of grants allocated on a constituency basis but I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 357 of 23 January 1996 which included a tabular statement of the organisations in each county which were allocated grants under the sports capital programme in 1995.

In relation to the youth sector specifically, it is not possible to produce meaningful statistics even on a county basis given the nature of the funding arrangements. A large proportion of overall funding is allocated to national bodies of the various voluntary organisations and local units are assisted by these bodies in a variety of ways including direct grant aid.

The latest Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and the Appropriation Accounts (1994) include details of grants paid under the youth and sport programmes.
