Vol. 461 No. 7

Written Answers. - Muslim National School.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

206 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Education if she will provide special help to the Muslim national school, Clonskeagh, Dublin 14, similar to that given schools teaching through the medium of Irish; if she will agree that the particular pupil profile of this special school, as the only school of its kind in Ireland, is such as to require special help; her views on the results of a survey carried out by the school and given to her Department which showed that all pupils have at least one parent who does not speak English as a first language and that 100 of the 169 pupils do not use English as their main language at home; her further views on the need for a remedial teacher along with a language teacher and a lower pupil teacher ratio; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3676/96]

The position in relation to these matters remains as stated by me in response to a question from Deputy O'Donnell on 31 January last.

My Department's inspectorate will consider the educational needs of the pupils attending the school concerned and how best any identified requirements can or should be addressed. In any event the question of providing a remedial teaching post or any other additional post to an individual school must be viewed in the context of the availability of additional teaching resources in the system generally.
I am not in a position to make any specific commitment in that regard.
