Mary Wallace

Question:

229 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the primary and post primary schools in County Meath that employ full-time and part-time caretakers; whether their positions are full-time or part-time; and the way in which vacancies are made known to the public. [3855/96]

The information sought by the Deputy is as follows:

Primary Schools

Five primary schools in County Meath employ full-time caretakers under a scheme introduced by my Department in 1979. The arrangements for appointment to these positions, when fillable vacancies occur, is a matter for each individual board of management. The schools concerned are: St. Mary's N.S., Trim; Scoil Mhuire, Navan; St. Oliver Plunkett's N.S., Navan; St. Declan's N.S., Ashbourne, and St. Anne's N.S., Navan (on a shared basis with St. Joseph's N.S., Navan).
The following 17 primary schools are in receipt of an additional capitation grant towards the cost of caretaking services. A school authority in applying the grant is free to determine hours to be worked, rates of pay and arrangements for recruitment. These are as follows: Rathoath N.S., Rathoath; St. Michael's B.N.S., Trim; Convent of Mercy N.S, Kells; Oldcastle N.S., Oldcastle; Scoil Bríd, Cannistown, Navan; Dunboyne B.N.S., Dunboyne; Dunboyne G.N.S., Dunboyne; St. Colmcilles N.S., Navan Road, Kells; Bohermeen N.S., Bohermeen, Navan; O Gramhna N.S., Athboy; Dunshaughlin N.S.; Scoil Pádraig, Slane; SN an Spioraid Naomh C, Laytown; SN an Spioraid Naomh B, Laytown; St. Paul's N.S., Abbeylands, Navan; Scoil Mhuire, Ashbourne, and Gaelscoil na Cille, Ashbourne.
Community Schools
Kells, two full-time caretakers; Ashbourne, one full-time caretaker.
The filling of caretaker vacancies is by advertisement and open competition.
Vocational Education Committee Schools
The allocation of maintenance staff i.e., caretakers, attendants and cleaners in the vocational education sector is made on a scheme wide basis. It is a matter for the vocational education committee to deploy the staff as it sees fit. The Department has sanctioned 9.5 caretaking posts for County Meath vocational education committee.
Per a Census Return of 1 July 1995 County Meath vocational education committee had allocated the caretaking posts as follows: Navan, one full-time; Athboy, one full-time; Dunshaughlin, one full-time; Longwood, one full-time; Nobber, one full-time; Oldcastle, two full-time; Trim, one full-time; Dunboyne, one part-time (20 hours * 52 weeks); and Old vocational school, Kells, one full-time, this building is used for Adult Education classes only.
The filling of vacancies is by advertisement and open competition.
Secondary Schools
Under the additional capitation grant scheme introduced in 1992 my Department provides financial assistance towards the provision of caretaking services in secondary schools with enrolments of 200 or more recognised pupils. Grants are paid to seven schools in County Meath as follows: St. Patrick's Classical School, Navan; St. Joseph's Secondary School, Navan; Scoil Naomh Iosaif, Athboy; Eureka Secondary School, Kells; Coláiste Mhichíl na mBráithre, Trim; Convent of Mercy, Trim.
As is the case for primary schools a school authority is free to determine hours to be worked, rates of pay and arrangements for recruitment.
