Vol. 461 No. 7

Written Answers. - Seven-Day Detention Arrests.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

253 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice the number of arrests that have been made under the seven-day detention without trial rule for suspected drug dealers; and the evaluations, if any, that have been carried out on the effectiveness of this measure. [3915/96]

The Criminal Justice (Drug Tafficking) Bill, 1996, which was recently published contains, inter alia, a provision to allow for the detention of a person suspected of having committed a drug trafficking offence for a maximum period of seven days. As the Bill has yet to be enacted the question of detaining persons under this provision has not arisen.
