Vol. 461 No. 7

Written Answers. - Coastal Zone Management Study.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

291 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Marine the progress, if any, made on the strategy study on coastal zone management undertaken between his Department and the Departments of the Environment and Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3776/96]

In August 1995, the Ministers for the Marine, Environment and Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht commissioned a major study on Coastal Zone Management (CZM) in Ireland. The study is intended to provide a key input to the formulation of national CZM policy.

Considerable progress has been made to date in relation to reviewing available data on the coastal zone, legislative and administrative aspects and international developments. In addition, a comprehensive programme of consultation with Government Departments and State agencies, local authorities and other organisations, bodies and individuals with an interest in the management of the coastal zone has taken place. The consultants are due to report at the end of March 1996.
