Vol. 461 No. 7

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Alan Shatter

Question:

69 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Education the arrangements, if any, she intends making to ensure that a person (details supplied) in Dublin 16 who is attending Cheeverstown House is provided with appropriate education; and if she will respond to a letter received by her from his parents. [2827/96]

I can assure the Deputy that I am most anxious that a suitable education service be made available to the child in question.

My Department's primary inspectorate is actively engaged in discussions with the management of Cheeverstown House with a view to putting the necessary education service in place as soon as possible.

The fact that Cheeverstown House is not a recognised school has presented some practical difficulties in terms of my Department's ability to allocate the necessary teaching resources.

However, I am confident that recent proposals put forward by the Cheeverstown authorities for the establishment of a special school in the complex will facilitate an early resolution of this problem. These proposals are being given urgent consideration by my Department at present.

I have already responded to the letter which I received from the child's parents.
