Helen Keogh

Question:

213 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Education when the improvements required at Bunscoil Mhuire, Youghal, County Cork will be carried out. [3747/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 97, 192 and 213 together. The issue of my Department's acquisition of the CBS property is being pursued at present, but an agreement has not yet been reached on a purchase price. In the circumstances, I cannot give a specific date for the acquisition of the property.

Following lengthy discussions with the managements of the schools in Youghal, my Department entered into an agreement whereby the Presentation and CBS schools would amalgamate from last September. It was agreed, also, that the amalgamated school would be located in the Presentation building and that the former CBS building would be made available to house Gaelscoil Choráin.

The amalgamation of the two schools took place from last September. However, some classes were left in the CBS building and, as a result, it is not yet available to Gaelscoil Choráin.
Some weeks ago, my Department wrote to the school authorities clarifying aspects of the original agreement, including the requirement for vacant possession of the CBS property. Arising out of the correspondence, officials of my Department will be visiting the school within the next week or so to conclude discussions on the works programme required at the Presentation school building.
The amalgamation process in Youghal has proven to be quite complex, but I am hopeful that the matter can be brought to a successful conclusion shortly.
