Vol. 462 No. 1

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Art Examination, 1995.

Micheál Martin

Question:

85 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the names and location of the 29 schools whose art candidates for the 1995 leaving certificate art examination did not receive credit for craftwork submitted; and the number of students per school affected. [4107/96]

An earlier statement on this issue erroneously referred to 46 upgrades as opposed to 47. In all 50 candidates in 30 schools were not credited with a part of their art examination. In the case of 47 candidates in 29 schools the rectification of this error resulted in an upgrade which was notified to the schools and candidates involved. In the case of the remaining three candidates, the giving of credit for craftwork did not result in an upgrade. The following is a breakdown of the 29 schools and 47 candidates who received upgrades.

The above upgrades arose from an error in not giving credit for all components of the art examination. In addition, further investigation has now revealed that one further upgrade is warranted as a result of the incorrect processing of an appeal. The candidate and school are being advised of the revised result. All aspects of this further upgrade will be addressed by Price Waterhouse in their ongoing inquiry.

Question:

86 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the outcome of the 29 examination superintendents' reports, relating to the 29 schools affected by the error discovered in the marking procedure of the 1995 leaving certificate art examination, which were received by her Department within days of the 1995 craftwork exam section of the 1995 leaving certificate examinations being completed. [4108/96]

All reports and records submitted by the examination superintendents of the schools in question are being looked at by Price Waterhouse as part of their ongoing inquiry. Given the nature of this review it would be inappropriate for me to comment on this aspect of the matter at this stage.

Question:

87 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education whether the craftwork pieces namely sculpture, calligraphy, screen printing, pottery and others submitted by 49 students in 29 schools for the leaving certificate art examination 1995, are still missing. [4109/96]

I am informed that craftwork in respect of all but four of the candidates in question is missing. As the Deputy will be aware, the reasons for this and the attendant failures in the operation of the 1995 leaving certificate art examination are the subject of an inquiry by Price Waterhouse.
